Behind the lens
Chris Hovinga / HovingaPhoto
Fashion. Fine Art. Punk.
I’m Chris Hovinga, a fashion and editorial photographer based in Charlotte, North Carolina, along with my wife Gabrielle, we are creating some amazing art and photo experiences in and around the east coast.
I’ve pursued photography since 2016 and worked independently through Hovinga Photo since 2017, creating images with models, designers, brands, and creative collaborators.
Gabrielle specializes in Modeling, BTS footage, Reels, editorial coaching, hair and makeup.
For me, a photograph starts with intention. Light, timing, movement, expression, and composition shape what survives the moment. Black and white is central to my visual language; color belongs when it adds something to the story.
My work has appeared in MALVIE, The Edge, and People of Fashion, and has been exhibited at CLT Shooters Gallery and Gallery 51. I’ve photographed runway events for Charlotte Seen, Art Bando, Cotton Candy Runway, and The Face the Magazine, with runway and editorial work at Nine Eighteen Nine. Collaborations include Creative Destruction, Box Method, and Snarkeeze.
I work with digital and 35 mm film, studio and location lighting, and live tethered capture. My background in creative direction, marketing content, and project management helps translate an idea into a considered production—from a model portfolio to a brand campaign or a editorial senior portrait.
I’m a member of Charlotte Fashion Collective (CFC), CLT Shooters, and Artists Guild of Charlotte and completed Introduction to Photography and Related Media through MIT OpenCourseWare.
Whether we’re photographing a collection or telling your personal story, we’ll start with the idea—and make deliberate choices from there.
